The San Francisco Chronicle published an article featuring research conducted by Meg Sedlak and other RMP scientists, which has found elevated concentrations of PFOS, a persistent fluorine-containing chemical, in San Francisco Bay apex predators. Once the prime ingredient in Scotchgard, PFOS has remained elevated in harbor seals even though it has declined in sea birds that share their fish diet.
The RMP Sources, Pathways, and Loading workgroup met on October 23, 2013 to review SPL activities and objectives; to check in on SPL management questions; and to discuss future monitoring and modeling designs that address the changed management emphasis.
The first quarter TRC meeting was held on March 25, 2014. During the meeting Dave Senn provided an update on nutrients deliverables, Jay Davis provided an update on the Selenium Strategy, and Don Yee reviewed EBMUD's reanalysis of 2004-2006 organics data. Recommendations for reductions in the S&T program were discussed alongside a proposal for the addition of margins sampling.
