We help counties, cities, towns, and communities develop strategies to restore key ecological features and functions degraded or lost from our heavily transformed landscapes. Our work captures many aspects of the relationship between urban spaces and nature, including reducing extreme heat, slowing down and filtering stormwater, improving physical and mental health, providing equitable access to nature and its benefits, and supporting local and regional biodiversity.
As we synthesize data, provide analysis, visualize data, and develop conceptual frameworks and designs, we transform science and community visions into tangible recommendations that green our urban landscapes.

Making Nature’s City
A science-based framework for building urban biodiversity
Making Nature’s City provides a science-based framework for building urban biodiversity, allowing cities to create their vision for coexisting with nature. By bringing together diverse groups, including designers, planners, engineers, and residents, cities can connect the landscape through local parks, greenways, street trees, stormwater basins, and commercial and residential landscaping to support both functioning urban ecosystems and healthier communities.
Online Toolkit
The Making Nature’s City Toolkit website translates the guidance in Making Nature’s City into user-friendly tools and resources to help cities maximize the value that urban spaces generate for both native biodiversity and human health. The website also provides methods for:
- bridging principles with actionable design guidance to implement integrated solutions through the intersecting fields of urban ecology, urban planning, landscape architecture, and urban design.
- evaluating current conditions and developing urban design strategies that support biodiversity and human health.
- identifying areas within the urban matrix where benefits are most needed for humans and wildlife.
Ecology for Health
Design guidance for fostering human health and biodiversity in cities
Building on Making Nature’s City’s Urban Biodiversity Framework, Ecology for Health: Design Guidance for Fostering Human Health and Biodiversity in Cities presents guidance to maximize the value that urban spaces generate for both native biodiversity and human health.
The guide supports urban designers and planners. It focuses on three distinct scales: urban planning, site design, and detailed design. Within each scale, practical strategies are presented to create urban green areas that maximize benefits for biodiversity conservation and human health and also help address conflicts that may occur when addressing both human and wildlife needs.
Collaborative Salon
SFEI’s Ecology For Health Salon brought together a diverse group of 50+ practitioners passionate about multi-benefit greenspaces in support of human health. The Salon showcased our newest urban design guide, Ecology for Health, and sparked opportunities for dreaming up new collaborations between landscape architects, urban designers and planners, scientists, community organizers, and city staff. It was wonderful to see our office energized by everyone’s ideas and aspirations for fostering a healthy, biodiverse Bay Area.
