2012 Regional Monitoring Program Update

The Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in the San Francisco Estuary (RMP) is an innovative collaboration of the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, the regulated discharger community, and the San Francisco Estuary Institute. It provides water quality regulators with information they need to manage the Estuary effectively.

The Value of Regional Monitoring: Lessons learned from the RMP

Jay Davis and Meg Sedlak gave a presentation at the California Water Quality Monitoring Council meeting in Sacramento, CA titled “The Value of Regional Monitoring: Lessons learned from the RMP.” The RMP has become a model program that other regional monitoring programs are starting to emulate throughout the State.

Chicago Tribune investigative series on flame retardants interviews Susan Klosterhaus

‘Playing with Fire’, a four-part series on the controversial use of flame retardant chemicals in furniture, was published in May 2012 in the Chicago Tribune. Susan Klosterhaus of our Clean Water Team was interviewed and is mentioned in the fourth article titled ‘Toxic Roulette’, which investigates the use of the PBDE replacement Firemaster 550.

SWAMP Report on Contaminants in Fish from the California Coast

The State Water Resources Control Board's Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (SWAMP) has released findings from California’s largest-ever statewide survey of contaminants in sport fish from coastal locations. This report presents findings from 2009 and 2010 - including new data for 26 locations sampled in 2010. Monitoring in 2010 focused on the North and Central coasts, and revealed relatively high methylmercury concentrations in these areas.

San Francisco Bay Mercury News

The San Francisco Bay Mercury News is an electronic newsletter issued bi-annually. It is intended to be a compilation of mercury research activities currently underway in the Bay Area. Each researcher will provide a summary paragraph regarding the purpose of their research and recently accomplished milestones. Contact information follows each project summary. The newsletter is distributed by the San Francisco Estuary Institute as part of the Regional Monitoring Program.

2010 RMP Annual Monitoring Results

The Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in the San Francisco Estuary (RMP) is the primary source for long-term contaminant monitoring information for the Estuary. The RMP is an innovative and collaborative effort among the scientific community, the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board (Water Board), and the regulated discharger/dredging community.

Soil, dust, and drop inlet sediment Hg and PCB concentrations

In this component, 360 samples were collected in soil, dust, and drop inlet sediment in industrial areas of the Bay Area and analyzed of PCBs and Hg. The objective of this component was to better understand where and at what magnitude high concentrations occur in the urbanized environment. Data was collected from the cities of Richmond, Vallejo, Berkeley, Oakland, Benicia, Pittsburg, Emeryville, Concord, San Leandro, Hayward, San Jose, Sunnyvale, San Carlos, San Bruno, South San Francisco and San Francisco, plus portions of unincorporated Contra Costa County.

Stormwater pump stations GIS

In this component we compiled the locations of pump stations along with a range of associated data where available such as dry and wet weather flow, watershed area, dominant land use, year build, and if flow is measured. The reason for generating this data was to provide a data base for BASMAA and the Water Board to discuss the potential for wet and dry weather treatment in relation to potential or known areas of PCB or Hg sources and “hotspots”.
