The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) announced the establishment of the NFWF San Francisco Bay Estuary Conservation Fund. The fund’s first award goes to the State Coastal Conservancy to support an innovative effort to remove derelict creosote-treated pilings from San Francisco Bay. This will also support a related effort to restore Pacific herring habitat. The project ties to recommendations in 2010 San Francisco Bay Subtidal Habitat Goals Report. The recommendations were based on SFEI's work to map and assess the historical significance of these structures and to evaluate potential environmental impacts of creosote pilings.
