GENERAL OBJECTIVE

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE

MONITORING TASK

SAN LUIS DRAIN

To assess environmental conditions in the SLD by measuring selenium concentrations and other parameters in water, sediment, and biota.

WATER

1. To assess water conditions and water-borne selenium transport in the San Luis SLD by measuring flow rates and chemical constituents in the water column, including suspended sediments.

2. To assess compliance with monthly and annual selenium load targets.

3. To assess compliance with a maximum allowable discharge rate of 150 cfs.

Establish monitoring stations at the drain inlet (A) and outlet (B).
1. Measure flow rate, selenium concentrations, conductivity, suspended sediments and other water quality parameters.
2. . Calculate monthly and annual selenium loads being discharged from the drain (B) using continuous flow records and daily selenium concentrations in water.
3. Compare continuous flow records to the flow limitation.

SEDIMENTS

1. To assess sediment and sediment-borne selenium transport in the San Luis SLD by measuring contaminants of chemical constituents in bottom sediment.

2. To assess sediment management options by estimating sediment volumes and sediment quality.

Establish monitoring stations at the drain inlet (A) and outlet (B).
1. Measure selenium, boron, and total organic carbon content in bottom sediments.
2. Establish monitoring substations between checks 1 and 2, 10 and 11, 14 and 15, and 17 and 18 from which to measure selenium concentrations and estimate sediment volumes.

MUD SLOUGH

To assess the changes in environmental conditions in Mud Slough from pre-project conditions which are related to discharges from the SLD by measuring selenium concentrations and other parameters in water, sediment, and biota.

WATER

To assess changes in water conditions in Mud Slough from pre-project conditions which are related to discharges from the San Luis Drain by measuring flow rates, chemical constituents in the water column, flooding and overall changes in water levels.

Establish monitoring stations in Mud Slough upstream of the discharge from the drain (C), downstream of the discharge from the drain (D), upstream of the discharge to the San Joaquin River (E) and in a seasonal backwater area (I).
1. Measure flow rates from the SLD (D) and the San Joaquin River (E...
